This project has been recognized as a rare urban success in restoring a polluted waterbody in Dhaka. Spanning 311 acres, it has transformed a once non-functional canal into a retention basin (water reservoir). Bridges and walking paths have been created for the public, making movement easier, helping control waterlogging, and improving the environmental balance. It is very important to create more water-based projects like this and maintain them regularly to protect Dhaka’s heritage and waterbodies. In a city where new construction often happens without proper planning, Hatirjheel stands out as a rare project that has transformed the lives, mobility, and environment of Dhaka’s people. Before reconstruction, Hatirjheel was an environmental concern, with issues like polluted water, encroached reservoirs, and untreated waste. Despite various challenges, this project shows that a non-functional urban waterbody can be restored through well-organized design. |
