Serpentine Pavilion 2025

-

‘Serpentine’ is an exhibition space in Kensington Gardens, London. It exhibits contemporary art and culture across two sites: Serpentine South and Serpentine North, located a short distance away on either side of the Serpentine Bridge. Both sites host three exhibitions a year, featuring a variety of art, architecture, performance, and community projects.

Each year, a different architect creates a new pavilion. Throughout the summer, the pavilion serves as a cafe, meeting place, and venue for live events.

Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum has unveiled the design for this year's Serpentine Pavilion in London, which will mark the pavilion's 25th anniversary. The pavilion has been named 'A Capsule in Time'. The light wooden structure outside the Serpentine Gallery reflects the characteristics of a temporary pavilion.

Architect Marina Tabassum said, "During our design, we focused on the ephemeral nature of the pavilion, which to us feels like a capsule of time and memory. The relationship between time and architecture is quite interesting. Between permanence and impermanence, between birth, aging and destruction; architecture seeks to transcend time."

The architect further said, "Architecture in the Bengal Delta is ephemeral, because as the rivers change course, the places of residence have to change. Architecture becomes a memory of places of continued residence through stories."

"A Capsule in Time" will consist of four arched modules, the wooden structure of which will be covered with transparent panels. The modules will be separated from each other and a courtyard with a tree in the middle will be created, which will be aligned with the bell tower of the gallery. According to the architect, a part of the pavilion can be easily moved, so that the pavilion can be transformed into another shape.

A geometric shape – a half-capsule, made of semi-transparent, lightweight material, will allow natural light to enter it in a way that will essentially resemble a Bengali wedding canopy.
