Silk, produced by the silkworm Bombyx mori, originated in China over 4500 years ago and is now revered as the "queen of fabrics." Sericulture, which includes mulberry cultivation and silkworm rearing, plays a crucial role in rural economies, especially in Bangladesh, where 75% of the population resides in rural areas. It offers significant economic opportunities with low investment, high employment generation, and quick returns.

However, Bangladeshs silk industry faces several challenges such as high production costs, dependence on costly imported yarn, outdated technology, and insufficient government support. Currently, Bangladesh produces only 38-40 tons of the 300 tons of raw silk it needs, yet sericulture has immense potential for growth. To revive the industry, it is essential to increase local production, provide subsidies, introduce modern technology, and explore export opportunities.

Existing Analysis.jpg 1Existing analysis

Following the closure of the ration industry, the people of Bholahat shifted from silk cultivation to mango farming, which led to  the decline of the once-thriving silk industry in the region. Bholahat, once known as the ‘Rajshahi of Bengal, had fertile soil ideal for silk production. However, over time, the country began importing silk cocoons and yarn, undermining local industries.

The industry began reopening, and with the launch of its second phase in 2022, this project aims to restore Bholahats status as a prominent silk hub. The project addresses key challenges faced by silk farmers, including limited market access, insufficient state support, and inadequate compensation. Its goal is to revitalize the silk industry, ensure fair compensation for farmers, and re-establish Bholahat as a leading center for silk production.

Reshom Shilpo in Bholahat, with the goal of revitalizing Bangladeshs silk industry. By enhancing local production, introducing cutting- edge technology, offering subsidies, and opening up export opportunities, the project aspires to foster sustainable economic growth, empower the community, and position Bholahat as a key player in the silk market.

In  Bholahat,  we’re  witnessing  a  shift  as  mulberry  trees  are gradually being replaced by mango orchards. My project site is surrounded by these mango orchards, and working in such an environment, I’ve prioritized both people and nature. I’ve drawn inspiration from the natural resources of the mulberry tree and the village's rich traditions. By combining these elements, my goal is to motivate the community to embrace mulberry cultivation once again, ensuring they have enough trees and access to markets for their produce. This approach not only supports the local economy but also encourages cultural sensitivity and a sustainable, organic lifestyle to enhance the overall quality of life.

Design method

The project adopts a sustainable, environmentally conscious design approach to restore and develop the silk industry in the Bholahat region. The main objective of the project is to create an environment conducive to silk cultivation and provide a safe, self- sufficient settlement to protect the livelihoods of the local people. This approach not only encourages silk production, but also creates long-term economic opportunities in harmony with the environment.

The main objective of this project is to provide local silk farmers with access to modern technology, increase local production, and create marketing and export opportunities for silk products. The project will help develop Bholahat as a new silk hub, which will improve the livelihoods of the local people, create employment, and make the country's silk industry competitive in the global market.

In this project, I have designed a sustainable village layout that integrates ancient practices with modern needs. Each house is equipped with a rearing unit, strategically placed to ensure easy public access. The mulberry fields, vital for silk production, are positioned around the village, creating a seamless connection between the fields and the community. The village is divided into ten groups, each with its own reeling unit, while a buffer zone separates the industrial part from the residential area.

To support both the industry and community, I have included key facilities such as a mosque, school, research center, and training center. The training center will help outsiders learn and participate in silk cultivation, addressing the local demand for skilled workers. A market is also provided to facilitate the sale of silk yarn and skeins, benefiting both the villagers and nearby silk farmers.

Incorporating sustainable practices, rainwater harvesting will reduce reliance on external water sources, solar energy will power silk production and other needs, and biogas will be produced from local waste to provide energy for cooking. Local materials will be used for construction, supporting the local economy and reducing environmental impact. Through this design, I aim to revive Bholahats silk industry while ensuring environmental sustainability and community well-being.
