Renowned architect and a brilliant figure in architectural education in Bangladesh, Professor Meer Mobashsher Ali passed away on Saturday morning, 08.02.2025. He was 84 years old at the time of his death. Professor Ali was a distinguished architect and visionary educationist. He was an integral part of BUET for almost 45 years from 1962 to 2006. He played a key role in the formation of the Department of Architecture, serving as its Head and later as the Dean of the Faculty. |
Professor Ali was not only a dedicated teacher but also a skilled practitioner of architecture. His notable designs include: Telephone Industries Corporation (TIC) building in Tongi, Fauji Jute Mill, Ghorashal Flag Station and Office Building, BCIC Housing in Patenga, Chittagong, Civil Aviation Office and Freight Terminal at Dhaka Airport, Girls Dormitory and several private residences at BUET. He has also written a book titled ‘Samtate Sangsad: Architectural Culture of Bangladesh, Louis Kahn and Sangsad Bhaban’. His work extended beyond building design; he actively participated in national-level planning and design initiatives, which left a significant mark on the urban development of Bangladesh. Internationally, he delivered lectures at prestigious institutions such as MIT (USA), Leuven (Belgium), Alicante (Spain) and BIT (Calcutta). Although a reclusive individual, his personal and professional experiences have had a lasting impact on the field of architecture and urban governance in Bangladesh. His guidance has inspired countless students and colleagues, guiding generations of architects. |
