The major railway station in Dhaka, Bangladesh, is Kamalapur Railway Station. It is the country’s largest railway station and one of the most vital transportation hubs between Dhaka and the rest of Bangladesh. A huge number of people use this transport system. MRT can play an important role to connect other parts of the city with Kamalapur. Govt. plans to connect multiple MRT stations in Kamalapur by creating a multi-modal transportation hub so that people can easily access different MRT lines through Kamalapur. Another ongoing project Dhaka elevated expressway also passes through the site. Having different types of transportation integrated into the site makes this site potential enough to play a role in the local and national transportation system. |

Designed by Robert G. Boughey in the 1960s, the Kamalapur railway station terminal building is an icon of modern architecture in South Asia. It is in fact one of the most iconic buildings in Bangladesh. The umbrella-shaped repetitive domes on the parasol roof became a fitting gateway for Dhaka, which respects the climate, culture, and context of the region. Conserving this iconic monument whilst transforming it into a multimodal hub is one of the focuses of this research. Reusing the existing structure will be a more sustainable & economical approach than demolishing and building a new structure. The site is surrounded by urban land use. No continuous pedestrian network, lack of public open space around this site, no well-defined bus stoppage, and no adequate waste management system are some issues with this site. In this research, I focused on connectivity, accessibility, sustainability, culture, conservation, and multimodal transportation hubs, particularly in the Kamalapur, Dhaka city transport system, such as Kamalapur Railway Station and four MRT Stations, as well as their surrounding areas, for improved transportation system integration and issues I mentioned earlier. The principal railway station in Dhaka, Bangladesh is Kamalapur Railway Station. Through this study, I wanted to find out how to conserve the existing railway structure by implementing all new proposed infrastructure and improving the quality of public space along with transportation and other facilities. |

This Project is significant for sustainable transit-oriented development. It is also substantial to conserve and continues using the old structure as long as it supports sustainability and preserves our culture. Making trouble-free passengers transportation among various types of the public transport system are: MRT – Pedestrian/Roads, MRT – Railway, MRT – MRT, Railway – Pedestrian/Roads etc. The Project aims to relieve the lack of transport options available in a rapidly growing part of the city and was identified as such in the original Dhaka Strategic Transport Plan (STP) of 2005 where promoting Soft Mobility (Example cycle lane, pedestrian, etc.) connecting to the Existing Heritage and providing Quality Public Space, Reducing Traffic congestion through Sustainable Development is possible. |
