This thesis addresses the public transport challenges caused by the overpopulation in Dhaka. The DNCC proposes the relocation of three inter-district bus terminals to enhance public transportation services in the city, along with the development of efficient bus and car parking management systems within the DNCC area.
|
One key aspect of this proposal is the relocation of the Gabtoli Inter-district bus terminal to Hemayetpur, Savar, site area of 43.20 acres, which will also include a bus depot for overnight bus parking with adequate capacity. The project is further integrated with MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) Line 5, which will run from Vatara to Hemayetpur, with a depot located at the terminal. The primary objectives of the project are to improve traffic flow within Dhaka City in a safe and efficient manner and to build capacity in the bus terminal management system for the relevant stakeholders. |
A significant number of workers travel from this area to Dhaka city every day. With the population growing rapidly, by 2035, the area will become more urbanized, leading to an increased demand for various types of facilities. During peak hours, Dhaka-Aricha Road experiences a heavy load of inter-district and inter-city buses, contributing to traffic congestion. |
|
The Gabtoli bus terminal, which handles a large volume of inter-district traffic along Dhaka-Aricha Road, is a major contributor to this congestion. Additionally, the workplaces in Savar-Aminbazar place considerable pressure on this road, with much of the traffic being private vehicles. Given that this area is rapidly approaching the scale of a city, a large number of inter-district passengers also shift their vehicles here. To address these challenges, the development of a mass transit hub in the Hemayetpur area is essential. This hub would not only provide a more efficient public transportation system but also help reduce congestion in Dhaka city by encouraging people to use public transport and making their travel more convenient. |

Concept: Journeyscape Transit. Where every step towards the destination is an oppurtunity to explore, discover and connect, fulfilling the mission as a connector offering a range of facilities for leisure attraction, retail offerings, kids activities etc. for visitors. Imagining the center of the terminal as a major public realm attraction. Integrating the public realm with the bus terminal facility so closely. A space where journeys intersect, experiences converge and communities thrive. |

Form Derivation Form generated from a rectangular, divided into two parts. The smaller part for arrival and the larger part is for departure, these creates a grand common lobby which connects all the modes of the terminal. This space offers an open, naturally ventilated, vibrant public space with green entering inside the building that flows towards the outdoor as well. |
|
Design Method The terminal building is designed to cater to the public, ensuring easy access to all the essential facilities needed during travel. It offers a seamless experience for every traveler. From my understanding, the design effectively addresses the complex flow of circulation among passengers, ensuring that individuals using different modes of transport never cross paths or collide. Additionally, the architectural elements have been thoughtfully designed to enhance visibility across the building, allowing passengers to easily locate their intended transport mode without the risk of getting lost. |

In many terminal spaces, waiting can feel like a drag. But here, we’ve transformed that experience into an opportunity for enjoyment and exploration. Instead of merely passing time, passengers and their families can immerse themselves in a variety of experiences, making their journey truly memorable. The thoughtfully designed architecture enhances this, offering easy access to a food court, retail shops, exhibition spaces, cafes, and areas with lush greenery and open spaces to relax. |
|
A large, vibrant central space welcomes visitors with natural light streaming from the roof, creating an inviting atmosphere. The connecting bridge from the arrival hall to the MRT concourse not only provides a smooth transit experience but also visually connects key areas, enriching the overall flow. These common spaces serve as the heart of the terminal, seamlessly linking all modes of transport, ensuring that travelers can navigate effortlessly to their destinations. |

On the second floor, the VIP lounge offers a luxurious retreat, beautifully connected to the double-height arrival lobby. Here, large glass windows provide sweeping views of the outdoor greenery, creating a peaceful escape. For those working behind the scenes, this included dedicated spaces for bus drivers, including accommodations, resting areas, a bus workshop, and even a fuel station, ensuring smooth operations and a comfortable work environment. |
